Engineering Manager

As an Engineering Manager, you spend your days analyzing your facility’s ability to maintain forecasted demands. Your goals support facility managers and facility needs. Unfortunately, you alone have to think through all of the “what if’s” and countless scenarios involved if the production increases or more staff is added, or new technology is implemented on the floor. Engineering Managers also have the stress of explaining complicated engineering designs to non-engineering decision-makers who hold the purse strings. That’s why you must provide planning and funding for capital projects or handle requests to look at new facility construction.

Engineering Manager Project Considerations

The Engineering Managers’ job can have a significant impact on both production and safety. Several questions probably go through your mind daily. For example:

  • Does production have the capacity to meet the goals six months from now?
  • What is the most efficient way to increase production?
  • If the company increases staff at my plant, what changes need to be made to the facility?
  • Looking at my transportation modes, do I need to increase rail car storage or shipping/receiving in the warehouse?
  • What load-bearing improvements need to be made?
  • Can the wastewater system keep up with the level of production and still meet EPA and state standards?
  • Is this going to create a storm or wastewater that I will need permits for?
  • What earthwork needs to be done to expand my facilities?
  • What happens if………?
  • How am I going to get buy off on……..?
